Leak Testing of Nuclear Gauges

Internal and/or external exposure to Ionizing Radiation can have devasting effects on the health of people, contaminate the environment and cause damage to equipment. However, Ionizing Radiation has several significant uses in medicine and industry as it plays a critical role in diagnostics and monitoring of specific operational conditions. The fact that Ionizing Radiation is both useful and hazardous has attracted statutory regulation in the use and maintenance of nuclear gauges to ensure that exposure is restricted to legally allowable limits.

METS undertakes leak tests on nuclear density gauges (while in use and in storage) to determine whether or not they are leak tight. Working with the Radiation Protection Authority of Zambia (RPA), METS conducts assessments on nuclear gauges and proposes mitigation measures to safeguard the health of people and the environment.
